The first album I ever bought was a CD of Demon Days by Gorillaz I got off Amazon when I was 13. I used to exclusively listen to this album on loop, if I would’ve had last.fm or something like that in middle school, I have no doubt it’d probably be my top listened to album of all time. Gorillaz in general were the first band I discovered by myself and their first discography up until The Fall will always mean a fuck ton to me.
You know now that I think about it… there might be a reason I don’t get invited to many parties.
I’ve listened to this compilation of Yabujin’s music in full at least once a day for the past couple of weeks. It’s so hypnotic and I’m absolutely in love with it’s production. Usually when I hear purposely “lo fi” recordings they’re usually focused on analog lo fidelity, cassettes and beat up vinyl trying to be the sound replicated. Hearing digital lo fidelity, with samples of old flash games and very bitcrushed and compressed audio you’d hear on newgrounds in 2006 done THIS WELL is super inspiring to me and something I want to experiment with eventually but within the context of the VaporFolk sound I do.
Playboi Carti - Whole Lotta Red
I hated this album when it first came out. I remember I preordered a shirt for it and when I first listened to it I was so disappointed I cancelled my shirt order. Goddamn that is one of my biggest regrets. A couple months after it’s release I started to listen to the album “ironically” because I thought parts of the album were (and still are) super funny to me. (I DON’T WRITE RAPS I WRITE POEEEEMSSS) Eventually the more I listened the more I realized I LOVE THIS FUCKING ALBUM MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF. It never fails to pump me up. IT MAKES ME WANNA TURN INTO A VAMPIRE AND DESTROY SOMEONE’S NECK WITH MY TEETH. I TAKE MY SHIRT OFF AND THE HOES STOP BREATHING!!! I TAKE MY SHIRT OFF AND THE HOES STOP BREATHING!!!!
In terms of the indie/emo folk side of my music, this EP has always been a huge influence on my music. I Am Satan is the song that made me buy a banjo. Speak Dark Presence is one of the best openers to any album/EP of all time as far as I’m concerned. Literally everything about this EP is perfect to me and i wish I could get even half as good as I think this EP is.
Literally any Daniel Johnston album. Daniel Johnston is easily the biggest influence in both my music and visual art. Albums like Hi How Are You? and Merry Christmas helped me navigate through many heartbreaks and mental breakdowns and have made me a better person when I came out of them. The sincerity and vulnerability in all of his albums is kinda what inspired me to start doing Magick Flavour Station in the first place and will probably continue to always inspire me in some way with every song I make. To me Daniel Johnston shows that you have to do to make good art is be yourself and is honest and everything else will fall into place eventually. (Golly Gee makes me cry everytime I hear it)
It’s kinda hard for me to find an album that people don’t expect me to love because I’m pretty open about trying to listen everything. That being said, if I had to choose it’d probably be this one. 20 Something is one of my favorite album outros, it’s so pretty and ahhh SZA’S VOICE???? It gives me really bad gender envy. Ah so good. This album makes me dance like a slut in my bedroom at like 2am by myself.
